Varieties of Bamboo

The USDA Hardiness Zone map puts Houston in Zone 9a, but communities just north of the city are in 8b. Although the city enjoys a humid subtropical climate with tropical influences, winters are, on average, colder than South Florida but warmer than Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, and other inland Texas cities. Cold fronts during the winter can drop nighttime lows into the 30s, but they usually stay above freezing. These cold fronts can bring cold rain, low wind chills, and short periods of frost.

Consider one of these versatile, eye-catching clumping bamboos from Palmco that will grow beautifully in Houston:

Alphonse Karr Bamboo has low water requirements and is extremely cold-hardy to about 15°F once established. It’s a dense Chinese bamboo that grows to 20 to 25 feet with 1- inch diameter culms and is one of the best screen or hedge bamboos. The plant has striking yellow culms and random green stripes and provides a golden glow in the garden. New shoots and culms are often pink.

Emerald Bamboo is the variety most people picture when they think of bamboo. It is elegant, tall and straight, and the new culms have a whitish-blue waxy tint that turns a muted green color as they age. The culms are about 2-inches in diameter, and the plant grows to a stately height of 30 to 40 feet. Bambusa mutabilis makes an excellent ornamental specimen and creates an attractive, dense privacy screen or windbreak. It is cold-hardy to 15°F.

Seabreeze Bamboo is a Palmco customer favorite. Native to Southern China, Seabreeze is one of the most prolific species of clumping bamboo, quickly reaching heights of 35 to 40 feet to form a beautiful screen. When mature, Bambusa malingensis forms a graceful umbrella-shaped arch with attractive blue-white canes and is ideal for hedges and windbreaks. This very hardy clumping bamboo that can withstand temperatures down to 20°F.

Tropical Blue Bamboo is a popular clumper from China that has light green leaves and nicely spaced thin-walled culms with a mystical pale blue powdery bloom. Bambusa chungii is sometimes called Blue Timber Bamboo or White Bamboo. Its 35-foot height and 3” diameter canes grow upright and will create a dense privacy hedge. Tropical Blue Bamboo is very hardy to 20°F.
