Winter low temperatures are well above freezing throughout Louisiana, averaging 37 °F in the north and 46 °F near the Gulf, and most of the state falls within USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8B to 9B. With a humid subtropical climate, long, hot summers and short, mild winters, the state is an ideal location for growing many varieties of clumping bamboo.

Bamboo for Hedges

Clumping bamboos are colorful (from gold to green) and can quickly grow to mature heights of 10 to 40-plus feet, making them beautiful hedges. Some of the nicest hedge varieties we grow include:

Alphonse Karr Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’)

Alphonse Karr is one of the best hedge bamboos. It is a dense Chinese variety that grows very erect to 20 to 25 feet. The 1- inch diameter culms are bright yellow with random green stripes. New shoots and culms are often pink. Alphonse Karr will give a golden glow to any landscape. It has moderate water requirements once established and is extremely cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures down to 15 °F. Alphonse Karr does very well all over Florida, all along the Gulf Coast to Texas, and up to the Carolina Coast.

Golden Goddess (Bambusa multiplex golden goddess)

Golden Goddess is well-suited to smaller lots and containers on the patio or around the pool. The semi-dwarf bamboo also makes a beautiful 10 to 12-foot privacy hedge when planted closer together. The densely packed 1/4-inch canes are greenish in color with very small, delicate leaves. This bamboo is very hardy down to 12-15 °F and turns golden as it ages in full sun.

Seabreeze Bamboo (Bambusa malingensis)

This tough, bushy and very fast growing Chinese variety can reach heights up to 40 feet. The 2 1/2-inch diameter canes have a distinctive bluish-white tint in each culm section. Seabreeze is a very hardy clumping bamboo that can withstand temperatures down to 20°F. It is drought-tolerant, salt-tolerant and an excellent performer in Louisiana’s planting zones of 9a and up. When mature, it forms a graceful umbrella-shaped arch and is perfect for hedges and privacy screens. Its canes and emerald green leaves also make lovely “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows.

Caring for Bamboo

Clumpers grow outward from the original culms. They grow fairly slowly within a fairly tight-contained circular area, and are a wonderful low-maintenance alternative to the more aggressive running bamboos.

Clumping bamboos need loose, well-draining and slightly acidic soil. They prefer a location that gets at least 5 hours of sunlight every day and need a few inches of water per week. (They will need more water when newly planted or in dry, windier conditions.)

You can fertilize outdoor bamboo with a small amount of slow or controlled release fertilizer at planting. The golden rule is “a little and often.” Three to four applications per year of slow-release high nitrogen fertilizer is adequate.
