Bamboo Nursery

At Palmco, our bamboo nursery is specifically designed to grow the hardiest, least-invasive, and most beautiful bamboo you can find. We offer 14 varieties of clumping bamboo, which, distinct from running bamboo, is ideal for easy use in landscaping.

With over 600 acres in production, Palmco is one of North America’s premier providers of palm trees and clumping bamboo.

What Can You Do with Bamboo?

In landscaping, bamboo has a variety of applications. One of the things a lot of people love about many of the varieties of clumping bamboo is that it can act as an effective screener. It is great for privacy because of its density and height.

When used as a screener, rows of plants are aligned so that a division is made—either internal to your property or on your property line. This has a privacy-creating effect, but it is also quite attractive, not entirely unlike rows of small, dense, beautifully colored trees.

Easy to maintain and non-invasive, clumping bamboo is also great as a centerpiece (or in any number of other aesthetic applications). When one plant is used in isolation, it is a wonderful center of gravity around which other plants can be arranged.

Whether you are using clumping bamboo for a practical purpose or an aesthetic one, these beautiful and easy-to-care-for plants are a great addition to your property. They are truly a landscaper’s dream.

Why We Love Clumping Bamboos

  • Clumping bamboos spread very slowly. Each new rhizome produces only one culm, located very close to its mother culm. They turn upward and become canes immediately, grow within a fairly tight, contained circle, and are easily maintained.
  • Running bamboos, in comparison, send shoots out underground, traveling quickly as far as 15 to 20 feet from the main plant, producing new culms all along the way. They can easily grow out of control.
  • When grown in optimal conditions, clumping bamboos will reach their mature height in as little as 4 years. Species like Oldhamii Bamboo, for example, can grow 2 to 3 feet each day during the summer growing season!
  • Non-invasive clumping bamboos are native to tropical and semi-tropical regions of the world and can grow in a variety of conditions. They can grow in wetland areas, high mountain elevations, and in dry regions where droughts cause other crops to fail.

Clumping Bamboos to Consider

We offer 15 varieties of bamboos, grown in our nurseries, that are suitable for a variety of uses in a variety of climates. Here are two that are well worth highlighting:

Angel Mist
Angel Mist Bamboo, also known as Ghost Bamboo, is light in color—yellow or light green—with dark green striping and a waxy covering and can handle a variety of soil conditions. This beautiful bamboo is tall—35 feet in height—but not as tall as other similar “giant” bamboos. It is easy to care for and makes a strong, colorful ornamental centerpiece.

Emerald
Tall and elegant, Emerald Bamboo is a joy to work with and is the variety most people picture when they think of bamboo. It is light green with a persistent white plume and grows to a height of 30 to 40 feet. This one grows in a nice tight clump that creates a dense privacy screen.

If you are looking for easy-to-care-for screening or centerpiece plants, then you will love the clumping bamboo available from Palmco. Grown in our bamboo nursery, these plants are sure to satisfy. Please don’t hesitate to contact u Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm, at (239) 283-1329.
