Why Are Palms Good for Privacy?

It is easy to plant something that will block your neighbors, but this often means planting the same trees and shrubs that are familiar to everyone. Most of us don’t want that. We want something different, something that makes a statement.

Palms make attractive and effective privacy screens because they grow upwards fairly quickly, require little maintenance, and can create solid walls of foliage at desired heights.

Even if palms are everywhere in certain parts of Florida, they are still statement pieces. They are both practical and beautiful. And that makes them ideal.

Areca Palms

Areca palms are hardy, medium-height palms that live in warm areas. They are rated for use in zones 10A-11, which makes them perfect for places such as South Florida, where they are ubiquitous.

These unique bamboo-like palms are drought-resistant and moderately salt-tolerant, making them extremely versatile They grow to heights of 15 to 20 feet, which is perfect for adding privacy.

But what makes these palms exceptional for giving privacy is their leaves. The dramatic clustering palm has many trunks that spring up from the base of the plant. It has long feathery fronds that give it a lush, full look, and it reminds onlookers of the classic Florida palm tree.

Some people prefer to keep the Areca’s bushy leaves at bay so that its silvery green canes can be exposed. Ultimately, it will be up to your client. Regardless, these trees will make a gorgeous addition to any architectural design layout.

Pindo Palms

The Pindo palm is another great choice for privacy, particularly in colder climates. It is cold hardy down to between 12- and 15-degrees Fahrenheit, making it one of the most cold-tolerant palms available. Some will even survive temperatures as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit, but anything lower could cause serious tree damage. It is well-suited to Zones 8A to 10B.

This beautiful, slow-growing palm is easy to use in a variety of ways for landscaping purposes. It will reach about 15 feet tall, and is both moderately salt- and drought-tolerant. It may spread up to 10 to 15 feet. The fruit from this tree might cause some mess, so it’s best to keep it away from sidewalks and houses to avoid problems.
