Some of Our Favorite Cold-Hardy Clumping Bamboos:

Alphonse Karr Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’)- Alphonse Karr is a fast-growing variety of clumping bamboo. It is best known for its golden culms and green stripes. It is one of the most commonly used hedge bamboos in the world. But it is also a great option for privacy screens because of the height and width it reaches. It’s easy to maintain and trim and can serve as a wonderful focal point in an island or container. And, it is cold hardy in temperatures as low as 15°F.

Golden Goddess Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex ‘Golden Goddess’)- Golden Goddess is exceptionally cold hardy down to 15°F. Once established, it is also drought-tolerant. It is a smaller bamboo species only growing to about 10 feet in height, so it makes a great container plant or addition to smaller lots. It can also be used as an evergreen screen and, a year after planting, your clients will enjoy a gorgeous wall or decorative hedge.

Graceful Bamboo (Bambusa textilis gracilis)- One of the most lush and graceful of the Chinese bamboos, Graceful is also known as Slender Weavers bamboo. The lower third of the culms on mature plants are branchless, which allows you to see the canes without having to prune the plant. They are incredibly well-behaved with an upright growth pattern that makes them a great option for smaller yards and narrow spaces. Graceful bamboos are quite cold hardy, able to withstand temperatures as low as 15°F.

Seabreeze Bamboo (Bambusa malingensis)- Seabreeze is a bushy, tough, and fast-growing Chinese variety capable of reaching heights of 40 feet. Canes on the Seabreeze exhibit a bluish-white tint in each section and are roughly 2 ½ inches in diameter. This is a very hardy bamboo that can handle temperatures as low as 20°F. Plus it is both salt and drought tolerant and makes beautiful “bamboo sounds” when the wind blows. Seabreeze forms a graceful umbrella like arch when it matures and will make gorgeous privacy screens or hedges.

Perhaps you have been hesitant about using bamboo in customer landscapes for fear it will take over the whole yard and become impossible to control. Don’t worry; the cold-hardy clumping bamboo you purchase from Palmco will stay in one place. They won’t spread more than a few inches from the mother plant and can even tolerate periods of chilly weather, including short bouts of frost.
