False Ashoka

False Ashoka, or Polyalthia longifolia “Pendula,” is native to India and Sri Lanka. Its other common names include Mast Tree, Indian Mast Tree, Buddha Tree, Weeping Mast Tree, and Indian Fir Tree.

You may hear people mistakenly call it the “Ashoka Tree.”  Although there is a sacred Saraca indica (or “Asoka”) tree that has similar foliage, they are two different trees with few other similarities.

The tree was popularized in British India because it resembles the Mediterranean Cypress and because its stick-straight, lightweight trunk was ideal for building ship masts (hence the name Mast Tree). Today, the tree is primarily used to make pencils, boxes and matchsticks. The leaves are used for ornamental decoration during festivals.

The False Ashoka may have captured your attention when you heard that it’s an exceptional subtropical substitute for the Italian Cypress, a tree that can be difficult to grow in areas with high humidity, such as south Florida.

Because Polyalthia longifolia grows in a slender, columnar shape to heights of 30 to 45 feet, it is wonderful for screening. Use a group of trees to line an avenue or driveway, as tall living hedges, as architectural accents, or as privacy, noise and windbreak screens. But be sure to give each tree enough room to stretch to its full-grown width of 4 to 5 feet.

False Ashoka has layers of feathery, wavy-edged leaves that hang from its drooping branches and closely hug its trunk. They are colorful, ranging from coppery brown when new to shiny dark green when more mature, giving the tree an attractive look. And its fragrant star-like pale green flowers that bloom in spring are known for attracting birds and butterflies.

False Ashoka trees are best suited to USDA Zones 10a to 11 because they’re not very cold-tolerant. They prefer full or partial sun and well-drained rich clay, loam or sandy soil. They trees are drought-tolerant and suitable for xeriscaping. Young plants need protection from winds, but, once mature, False Ashoka are remarkably flexible and will bend like bamboos in a storm.
