Are They Really Non-Invasive?

Many people avoid bamboo of any kind for fear that the plant will run wild, taking over the landscape. This is not true for clumping bamboos. They are very predictable in terms of their size and shape and behave differently than running bamboos underground.

Running bamboos send shoots out underground (as far as 10 to 15 feet away) and produce new culms all along the way. Clumping bamboos typically stay in one place and won’t creep more than a few inches per year.
Clumping bamboos spread very slowly. Each new rhizome produces a single culm that remains very close to its mother culm. The rhizomes turn upward, becoming canes immediately, and are easy to maintain.
Clumping bamboos come from tropical and semi-tropical regions of the world, but many of them can withstand periods of cold climate, including short periods of frost. In other words, they are ideally suited for our Florida climate.

Here is a small selection of our stunning varieties of clumping bamboo:

Angel Mist Bamboo: Sometimes called Ghost Bamboo, this very rare mid-sized Chinese bamboo is one of the smallest Dendrocalamus species. It grows to a typical height of 35 feet with 3-inch diameter pale lime green culms with dark green stripes and a waxy powder covering and can handle a variety of soil conditions. Angel Mist bamboo makes a strong, colorful ornamental centerpiece and is ideal for use in an urban garden or as a screen on larger properties.

Asian Lemon Bamboo: This eye-catching bamboo has bright yellow culms accented by occasional green stripes and dark green leaves. New culms have pink and peach tones, making this a desirable, colorful ornamental. Asian Lemon will grow to 25 feet with 1-inch diameter culms. It is moderately hardy and frost tolerant. The relatively short height and low branching makes it ideal when you need to block out a two-story building.

Monastery Bamboo: Originating in Thailand, this beautiful, graceful bamboo has strong and extremely straight culms that can grow to 40 feet in areas where the soil is well-drained but consistently moist. It features small leaves on the top third that give it a cloud-like effect. Monastery bamboo is perfect for tight spaces as a specimen or accent, and makes an excellent windbreak. It is cold-hardy to 25 °F.
