Using Bamboo in Your Landscape

  • Privacy Screens: This is the most common use for clumping bamboo in the United States. Bamboo is a relatively inexpensive, fast-growing screen from six feet to more than 60 feet and can be used as a barrier in just about any setting.
  • Hedges: In a more formal landscape, most tall clumping bamboos can be pruned and shaped several times a year to maintain the form you want. If you want a taller hedge, it usually won’t take more than one or two growing seasons to achieve it.
  • Windbreaks: Bamboo weathers storms nicely and won’t blow down in strong winds. It is also lightweight and hollow; if canes do snap, they are not likely to do as much damage as downed trees.
  • Specimens: Add tropical beauty and create visual impact in any landscape with a beautiful bamboo. They are stunning on patios and around pools and look spectacular when combined with palm trees and other tropicals.

Clumping Bamboo Suitable for Central Florida

Alphonse Karr Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex ‘Alphonse Karr’) is one of the best screen or hedge bamboos. The dense Chinese bamboo grows to 20 to 25 feet and features bright yellow 1- inch diameter culms and random green stripes that give a golden glow to any garden. New shoots and culms often have a pinkish hue. It has low water requirements and is extremely cold-hardy down to 15 °F once established. Alphonse Karr does very well from Florida’s east coast along the Gulf Coast to Texas and up to the Carolina Coast.

Oldhamii Bamboo (Bambusa oldhamii) is a popular variety that is often called Giant Timber Bamboo. It’s not giant or a timber bamboo but does grow quickly to about 55 feet tall with large 4” to 5” diameter culms. When grown in the shade, new culms are a dark green with silver powder. In sunny conditions, culms will have more of an orange hue. Oldhamii Bamboo makes a stunning hedge, screen or wind barrier. It’s tolerant of a variety of climates and can handle frost to 20°F and short wet and dry spells. The large canes make lovely “bamboo sounds” when swaying in the wind.

Tropical Blue Bamboo (Bambusa chungii) is a popular clumper from China that has light green leaves and nicely spaced thin-walled culms with a mystical pale blue powdery bloom. It is sometimes called Blue Timber Bamboo or White Bamboo. With its 35-foot height and 3” diameter canes that grow upright, it will create a dense privacy hedge. Tropical Blue Bamboo is very hardy to 20°F.
