Ornamental Plants for Louisiana

Ornamental plants and trees are planted for their appealing features including fruit, flowers and fragrance, shape, colorful or unusual bark, and their overall eye-catching form. Use them to create added interest in your designs and for enjoyment by passersby and the general public.

Obviously, some areas of Louisiana are warmer than others, so you should choose plants that are most appropriate for the area you are landscaping. Our recommendations for Louisiana’s climate include:

King Sago: The King Sago Palm Tree, despite its name, is not a palm at all but a cycad plant. Cycads are some of the oldest plants in the world, dating to prehistoric times. Cycas revoluta is native to Japan’s southernmost islands where it enjoys a subtropical climate. It adapts to temperatures from 15 to 110°F and is hardy in USDA Zone 8 to 10. Your customers will admire its unique shape and texture and glossy metallic leaves.

Caranday Palm: Well-suited to zones 9 to 11, Caranday is a rarely seen palm from South America. It makes a stunning focal point and is excellent when used in groupings. It is known to withstand temperatures down to 20 to 25°F, loves full to partial sun, and performs best in moist, well-drained soil. If not trimmed too aggressively, the fronds will create a beautiful cascading fountain effect.

Nitida Palm: This large canopy palm, also called the Carnarvon Fan Palm, comes from the Carnarvon Gorge in Australia. It grows quickly to 40 to 50 feet. The Nitida likes water but is not bothered if it doesn’t get any. It’s also super cold-hardy and can withstand 20°F temperatures and lower without damage. Grow Nitidas as avenue plantings or in groups with staggered heights for a spectacular effect.

Washingtonia Palm: Also called the Mexican Fan Palm, this palm works well from zones 8b to 11 and is a fast growing variety. It is easy to transplant and can provide you with big tropical appeal. These are very large trees, reaching 70-100 feet in height. They make great street linings and open area designs.

Mule Palm: This palm will flourish in zones 8a through 10b. It is one of the hardiest feather palms and is a man-made hybrid between the Pindo and the Queen palms.  It has a very tropical appearance that resembles a coconut palm and is a grand specimen in any landscape. The Mule Palm is an eye-catching conversation piece that no one else in your neighborhood is likely to have.
