Palms for the Palm Coast Climate

Perched between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach on the northeast coast of Florida, Palm Coast is bordered on the east by 19 miles of Atlantic Ocean. It enjoys moderate temperatures and low humidity from October through April, and hot and humid conditions from May through September. Temperatures rarely dip below 20°F, placing Palm Coast solidly in USDA Zone 9a.

It’s hard to imagine a Florida landscape without palm trees, and there are many outstanding and unusual palms that will flourish in Zone 9a. Our recommendations include:

Canary or Canary Island Date Palm: Sometimes called the Pineapple Palm for its crown shaft that resembles a pineapple, Phoenix canariensis comes from the Canary Islands. The slow-growing palm is cold-hardy to 15° to 18°F and is valued for its impressive appearance as a specimen palm. The massive solitary canopy is highly visible and absolutely memorable. Give this palm lots of space – it can eventually grow to 40 feet and will rule the landscape.

Ribbon Palm: A showstopper along a driveway or avenue, Livistona dicipiens is a native of Australia. It is sturdy, moderately drought-tolerant, and cold-hardy to about 20°F. What makes the Ribbon Palm unique and graceful are its long, wispy costapalmate leaves that hang down like delicate ribbons, earning it the nickname Fountain Palm. It loves the full sun (but will also thrive in partial shade) and will grow slowly to an average of 30 feet.

Sylvestris Palm: Also known as the Silver Date Palm, Phoenix sylvestris is a very classy palm. Growing only 1-3 feet per year, it will eventually reach about 40 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide. The slim trunk has an interesting diamond pattern created by leaf scars, and can have a special cut done to make the deep orange of the trunk really stand out. Sylvestris is cold hardy to about 15°F, drought-tolerant and moderately-salt-tolerant. Many landscapers are using this stand-out palm on golf courses, to line streets, and as centerpieces for luxury homes.
