Did you know that there are nearly 3,000 different kinds of palm tree species on the planet? They are part of the Arecaceae family and are widely used in landscaping due to their exotic appearance. Most people associate palm trees with tropical landscapes, which makes them well known and extensively cultivated.

So how do you choose the right palms for your clients?

Palms for Zone 10A

Most people associate palms with surf, sand and sun. But they are actually quite versatile as long as you understand which ones are best planted in your USDA Hardiness Zone. Here are some of the best choices for those of you working in Zone 10A:

Areca (Dypsis lutescens)
Most industry professionals prefer our field grown Arecas because of the variety of available sizes and vastness of our inventory. However, we do offer container size versions as well. South Florida is rife with Arecas, and people enjoy the fruit it produces. We suggest you utilize it for screen and hedge installations.

Canary (Phoenix canariensis)
Canary palms are the most widely used specimen palms in the southeast. They are slow growers, but people appreciate their bold and formal appearances. These palms closely resemble pineapples with their stately calipers and majestic crown shaft. And, they are fairly cold tolerant.

Caranday (Copernicia alba)
This is a rare palm tree, also known as the Wax palm. It is a slow grower but can reach heights of 40 feet. In its native countries, the trunk is used for fences, walls, floors, and even telephone poles because the wood is very hard. The most attractive feature of the tree, however, is the leaves, which range from light green to silver to light blue. This palm makes a great standalone focal point.

Lady (Rhapis excelsa)
Lady Palms work in both indoor and outdoor plantings. These are shrub-like clumping palms and are often considered bamboo palms due to their appearance. Our suggestions for using Lady palms include low screening, container plantings, and as borders and privacy screens.

Reclinata (Phoenix Reclinata)
Perhaps better known as the Senegal Date Palm, this is an unusual palm that makes a dramatic specimen for campuses, parks, and residential yards. Spotlighting them creates a serious mood and really shows them off as centerpieces in landscape design.

Sylvestris (Phoenix Sylvestris)
There are many names for the Sylvestris palm, including: Wild Date Palm, Toddy Palm, Silver Date Palm, Sylvester, and India Date Palm. People use the fruit from the Sylvestris to make wine and jelly, and the leaves are used to make bags and mats. For people who are looking for beauty and function, this might be just the right palm!
