Mule (xButiagrus nabonnandii). This palm is great for customers that are looking for a palm tree that no one else in the neighborhood has. It is palm is reliant on human intervention to be mass produced for the landscaping industry. The Mule palm is a hybrid of the Pindo and Queen palms. Both of them are cold hardy and when put together they have produced an equally cold hardy offspring. The propagation methods keep this palm’s price on the high end. But, it’s a perfect option for the low temperatures that are seen during Louisiana winters. Its typical height is 20 feet tall, and it’s a slow grower.

Nitida (Livistona nitida). This is another obscure species hailing from a remote location in central Queensland in Australia. It gets its name for the glossy, jet black fruit, it produces. Since they have only recently been introduced into cultivation, they are still fairly rare so that makes them another great stand-out palm for those of you in Louisiana. They are cold tolerant to 24 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes them better suited for the southern part of the state. Nitida are large canopy palms so if you intend to plant more than one you should space them about 12-15 feet apart. And, though they can reach heights of 100 feet, they generally don’t grow past 50.

Sylvestris (Phoenix Sylvestris). Hailing from India, this slow growing palm can reach heights of 40 feet. But that’s not the most impressive aspect of the Sylvestris palm. In truth, it is a very versatile and functional palm. The fruit from the Sylvestris is used to make wine and jelly. Plus, the leaves are often used to make mats and bags in its native country. You will appreciate the appearance of the palm’s trunk as it has an interesting diamond pattern that is created by its leaf scars.
