Privacy Palm Trees Florida

If you live in Florida, you know the ubiquity of palm trees. You may have grown up around them. But now, perhaps, you are looking to plant some for privacy on a client’s property. If so, you won’t find a better selection than at Palmco!

Palmco is located in the community of Bokeelia on Pine Island, Florida where we have 600+ acres of palm trees and clumping bamboo in production. Our 18-mile long by 2-mile wide barrier island is surrounded by protective turquoise waters and provides a long growing season that enables our tropical plants to develop to their most beautiful potential.

A Floridian Staple

One of the great things about landscaping in Florida is palm trees. Many different varieties of palms will thrive in the Floridian climate, which means that you have a wide range of options for your landscaping project.

Are you looking for a statement piece? Something big and regal to be used as a centerpiece? They are available. Are you looking for an accent? Perhaps something smaller? They are available to you as well.

Are you perhaps looking for privacy? Maybe you want to screen a section of a property or divide residences from one another. If that is the case, then there are palms for that too.

Which Palms Are Best for Privacy?

Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis): You can recognize this beautiful palm by its swirled layers of ruffled fronds that resemble the jagged tail of a goldfish. It is a bipinnate palm, the only palm with this unusual leaf anatomy.

Fishtail palms are clumping palms and are a great alternative to bamboo. Reaching 20 to 25 feet tall, they have exploded in popularity in recent years. If planting them in a row for a privacy screen, plant 5 to 6 feet apart and they will fill in faster. At Palmco, we grow them in the field, some with as many as 7 heads.

Paurotis Palm (Acoelorrhaphe wrightii): The Paurotis or Everglades palm originates in South America but has been in Florida long enough to be considered a native species. It is capable of reaching heights of 20 to 30 feet with a canopy spread of 15 feet in diameter.

This versatile clustering palm is dense and thickly covered almost to the ground, making it ideal for privacy screening and hedge applications. In late spring it blooms with white flowers and half inch fruits that start off green, turn orange, and then go black when ripe, adding visual appeal to all your landscape design installments.

Of all the palms that are well-suited to privacy, there is one that stands out. That is the Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens), which is grown and planted heavily in South Florida. This palm thrives best in warm climates (10A-11) and has a high drought tolerance.

What is best about this dramatic clustering palm is that it features many trunks that spring up from the base of the plant. Though it can grow to 20 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter, its leaves begin just a handful of feet above the ground. When planted in succession, Arecas make great privacy screens, hedges and landscape backdrops.
