About Clumping Bamboo

Bamboo is a giant woody grass, not a tree, and is the world’s fastest-growing plant. Some bamboo varieties are known to grow up to two inches per hour in optimal weather!

Aside from their beauty, one of the best features of clumping bamboos is that, unlike running bamboos, they are non-invasive. They grow gradually outward from the center, and new culms grow taller and larger in diameter every year. They don’t spread horizontally beyond their assigned area and grow very much like shrubs.

Clumping bamboos are perfectly suited for use as dramatic focal pieces, privacy screens, hedges, living fences, windbreaks, and to stabilize soil on slopes. Consider including the versatile, manageable and eco-friendly plant in your next landscaping project.

At Palmco, we specialize in clumping bamboo varieties that are ideal for hot, southern climates yet cold hardy to about +20° F, primarily those of the genus Bambusa and Dendrocalamus. Here are three popular varieties to consider for your Punta Gorda landscape:

Angel Mist (Dendrocalamus minor ‘Amoenus’)
Angel Mist, also known as Ghost Bamboo, is a very rare mid-sized Chinese bamboo and one of the smallest Dendrocalamus species. It grows to a typical height of 35 feet with 3-inch diameter pale lime green culms that feature dark green stripes and a waxy powder covering. This tough species can handle a variety of soil conditions. Angel Mist bamboo makes a strong, colorful ornamental centerpiece.

Golden Hawaiian (Bambusa vulgaris ‘Vittata’)
Often called Hawaiian Gold Timber Bamboo or Painted Bamboo, this beauty is one of the most cultivated ornamental bamboos in the tropical world. It features bright yellow 4-inch diameter canes with random green stripes that resemble drip marks. Easily propagated, it grows to a typical height of 40 to 50 feet within about three years. Golden Hawaiian bamboo is ideal for ornamental centerpieces and tall screening in tropical areas..

Graceful Bamboo (Bambusa textilis gracilis)
As the name suggests, this Chinese variety, also called Slender Weavers, is the most graceful of all bamboos. It has few lower branches on mature culms, so its attractive 1-inch diameter canes can be easily seen without having to prune the plant. Graceful Bamboo has an upright growth pattern and is very well-behaved. Growing to a typical height of 25 feet, the plant is very hardy and will fit nicely in any city or country landscape, including small, narrow yards.
