Punta Gorda, at the edge of the Gulf Coast, along with most of Southwest Florida, is in USDA Hardiness Zone 10a. The area is classified as having either a humid subtropical climate or a tropical savanna climate, with temperatures rarely rising to 100 degrees Fahrenheit or dipping below freezing. Here are a few palms that will turn your landscape into a tropical paradise:

Alexander Palm: The sleek and elegant Ptychosterma elegans is an Australian native and is also known as the Solitaire Palm. It has a slender trunk and relatively small canopy, making it perfect for narrow spaces. The old fronds will fall off by themselves, so this palm is a maintenance-free dream. It loves sun and, if protected from cold and drying winds, will reach 20 to 25 feet. Alexander grows naturally as a single, but Palmco also grows them as doubles, triples and even multi-trunk beauties.

Areca Palm: The dramatic Dypsis lutescens is a clustering palm, which means that many trunks spring up from the base of the plant. Also called the Feather Palm, it has fluffy, fine-textured dense fronds and a lush, full look. Arecas can reach heights up to 24 feet, making them ideal when used as privacy screens, hedges and landscape backdrops. Its canopy can grow 10 to 14 feet in diameter, so give it enough room to grow properly. Palmco is a leading supplier of field-grown Arecas in a variety of sizes.

Ribbon Palm: If you’re looking for a unique palm for a driveway or avenue planting or for shade by the pool, Livistona decora, also known as the Ribbon Fan Palm, Fountain Palm or Weeping Cabbage Palm, is a great choice. The canopy is dark green with long, delicate, ribbon-like leaves that hang toward the ground in an almost weeping appearance. This Australian native grows slowly to heights of about 30 feet, is cold hardy to about 20°F, tolerates a wide range of soils, and is very insect and disease resistant.

Thatch Palm: A Florida native, the Thatch Palm loves the coastal and warm, humid areas of South Florida. It has a slender grey trunk with dark green fan-shaped leaves at the top that are about three feet long and have drooping tips. It also produces white flowers on yellow stems. If planted in the shade, Thrinax radiata will stay low to the ground for a long time but will eventually reach about 20 feet. These palms enjoy moist, sandy, well-drained soil and tolerate salt and drought very well.
