Royal Palm Facts

The Royal Palm, or Roystonea regia, grows well in USDA zones 10A-11. It is originally from Cuba and Florida and can grow to be up to 70 feet tall. Its large stature and striking appearance make it a notable addition to many landscapes. In fact, many people think it is the most beautiful palm in the world. And, with nearly 3,000 species of palms worldwide, that is a serious compliment.

Royal Palms create gorgeous tropical barriers, and they are considered architectural dreams. This is why they are frequently used in landscape designs for shopping centers, street lining, resorts, gated communities, and high-end homes.

Their self-cleaning ability allows them to drop fronds in strong winds to avoid toppling. When they are properly fertilized, it’s not unheard of for Royal Palms to grow as much as a foot per year.

Taking Care of Royal Palms

Taking care of Royal Palms requires that you plant them with top-soil or organic peat moss in the hole and apply a slow-release, granular, palm fertilizer in spring, summer, and fall seasons.

Due to the tremendous size of the stems and fronds, it is recommended that you plant these a decent distance from walkways and homes. When their fronds drop, don’t be surprised by the thunder-crack sound and the crash that occurs when they hit the ground.

It is a good idea to water the Royal Palm on a regular basis so long as you allow its root ball to dry out a bit between watering. However, when you first install them, we suggest using bubblers that put out 2-3 gallons of water per minute. Make sure these are placed on both sides of the root ball.

As we mentioned, due to the sheer height and size of these palms, proper spacing between them and surrounding structures is crucial. Be certain that you provide at least 8 feet between the tree and the home so that falling fronds will not create damage and so that the fronds themselves won’t be damaged if they touch walls.

Plant Royal Palms in a row if you are adding multiple trees to the landscape, and space them 8 to 10 feet apart. These palms are far too large for containers, and that is the prime reason they are best suited for larger homes and buildings.
