UnIQUE Zone 9B Palm Trees

At Palmco, we pride ourselves on being able to offer you a large selection of unique palm trees, rare palm seedlings, and cycads from all over the world. Some of our most unusual species that are suitable for USDA Zone 9b include:

Caranday Palm – This stunning palm comes from South America. Fairly cold hardy, it is known to withstand temperatures down to 20 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, loves full to partial sun, and performs best in moist, well-drained soil. The Caranday (Copernicia alba) has a dense crown of wax covered stiff fronds and is also known as the Wax Palm. It’s easy to grow and maintain and, if not trimmed too aggressively, the fronds will create a beautiful cascading fountain effect. This palm is well-suited to Zone 9 to 11.

Mule Palm – This is an eye-catching beauty that you won’t see everywhere. It is one of the hardiest feather palms and is a man-made hybrid between the Pindo and Queen palms. The Mule Palm (xButiagrus nabonnandii) is difficult to produce, however, so mature specimens are rare but, by all definitions, this is the perfect palm. Its slightly curved trunks have a coconut-like appearance, giving the palm a tropical appeal. The Mule Palm grows fast to about 20 feet, is extremely cold hardy and will flourish in Zones 8a to 10b.

Nitida Palm – This large canopy palm with dark green foliage and an attractive thatched trunk, Livistona nitida, comes from Australia’s Carnarvon Gorge and is sometimes called the Carnarvon Gorge Palm. It is fast growing to average heights of 40 to 50 feet. The Nitida likes water but will tolerate periods of drought. It’s also super cold-hardy and can withstand 20°F temperatures without damage. Grow the Nitida palm as avenue plantings or in groups with staggered heights in Zones 8 to 11.
